Amazon unveils iPad competitor

Amazon has declared war against Apple -- and a few other companies -- announcing a slew of new products at a NY press event Wednesday morning. As expected, the online retail giant has unveiled plans to release a tablet computer, called Amazon Kindle Fire. The 7-inch device will cost just $199, a price point that's likely to make it a hot holiday gift item. Shipments are scheduled to begin Nov. 15. "We're building premium products at non-premium prices," said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. The device, of course, actively supports Amazon's Kindle functionality, but will also provide access to Amazon's streaming library of movies and television shows (which numbers over 100,000 at this point), the Android App store and full color magazines. All content will be stored using Amazon's Cloud storage system, meaning if users choose to delete local copies from their Kindle Fire, they can quickly retrieve them for no cost.Amazon has been steadily building up its partnerships among studios in recent months to expand its video offerings. Earlier this week, it announced a deal with Fox, adding fare such as "The X-Files," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "24" and "Arrested Development" to the Amazon Prime lineup. It will also add a few exclusives, such as "The Wonder Years". In late July, it added NBCUniversal Domestic TV Distribution (and titles such as "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Elizabeth," and "Gosford Park") to its collection.All programming on the Kindle Fire will use Amazon's Whispersync technology, letting people watch part of a program on their tablet, then pick up where they left off at home on their television. The company also clearly highlighted the content available for the system, rather than the hardware itself. (Other tablets have been criticized for being light on content.) It does lack a few of the features people love about the iPad, though, including an embedded camera and microphone. The lack of 3G could be a pain point as well. But with the Kindle Fire's low price, the company expects people will be willing to overlook those shortcomings. "We're making many millions of these, but I still recommend you pre-order today," said Bezos. Beyond the tablet, Amazon dramatically expanded its lineup of Kindle eReaders, announcing a pair of touchscreen devices (3G and WiFi) that do away with the keyboard and buttons that have been on previous generation models. The new systems also feature a longer battery life and the most advanced eInk display the company has ever used, said Bezos.And like the Kindle Fire, they're priced to sell. The WiFi Kindle touch will cost $99, while the 3G version will run $149. (The 3G will work in 100 countries, noted Bezos and will not carry any monthly fees.) Meanwhile, three of Al-Dhbe's charges become central figures in the docu: Saif Slaam, a 7-year-old Kurdish boy with a magnificent voice, given to fighting when taunted by his classmates; Mohamed Waael, a sometimes moody teenager, member of the Iraqi youth diving team and talented musician; and Salah Abass, a 10-year-old so traumatized by his past that he cannot speak or attend a regular public school like the rest of the boys. The DV lensing is grainy and unpolished, and some moments feel awkwardly staged (particularly in the scenes in which Al-Dhbe returns to his own house and receives a "you neglect us" scolding from his wife). Nevertheless, pic does provide a you-are-there feeling, even reeling, like the boys, from an explosion close to the safe house. Cutting could be tighter and more focused, and the open ending would have greater impact if it directed viewers how to help Al-Dhbe's organization. You can only put so much abstraction on a pop record before it like tips the scales and feels imbalanced or possibly indulgent for what a fan of a rock or pop record wants, so for the last three years I’ve basically been piling up stuff that’s gone into the Symmetry pile, and we’re going to release different volumes of it, and my score for Drive is about half of the first one. So it’s really cool, and the music will be heard—I’m sure because it’s film-based, the score will probably end up in a ton of other movies. Because it’s perfect for film: it’s abstract enough, and it’s not locked into a pop structure, which is really good visually because I know editors have trouble with really strictly structured music. Movieline previously dug up Drive-inspired sketches that Jewel and his Chromatics collaborator Adam Miller had drawn to go with the film tracks; Jewel explained that the sketches came from his highly-involved preparatory process, which began with studying the James Sallis novel on which the film is based: I have a lot of weird rituals. One of the first things I did was I took the book and I highlighted all of the phrases, things like “last day,” “sanctuary,” all of these different phrases from the movie that stimulated my brain, and I’d print those words really big and put them on the wall. Or while I’m writing—this was sort of like a mantra — we were drawing pictures while watching the movie every day. Because everything I do is like going into this camp mode where we would cut ourselves off. I was watching the movie while taking a bath, I was watching the movie while eating, like every day. Because there was only so much time and I wanted to know the movie inside and out, and I can’t be watching the movie while I’m actually writing. While I was actually trying to figure out melodies and things like that, I had to watch the movie as much as possible. Michael C. Hall in talks for new 'Dexter' deal

Hall "Dexter" star Michael C. Hall is in negotiations for a new pact to continue on Showtime's top-rated drama series. Hall has been in talks with Showtime to renew his deal for several months, as his previous contract expires after the show's upcoming sixth season, which bows Oct. 2. "Dexter" is a vital property for the CBS-owned pay cabler, which owns the show. It pulls in higher ratings than any other series and has been a strong draw in international markets. It's unclear how many more seasons the two sides are considering under the new pact or whether the length of the term is a sticking point. Hall is said to be looking for a significant salary bump as well after working under his original contract for the past six seasons. Thesp is believed to have started out in 2006 at a per-episode salary in the high five-figure range, though his paycheck has likely swelled since then. After the second season, Hall was named a co-exec producer on the show, and he was upped to exec producer rank in season four. Once an exec producer, Hall was entitled to share in ancillary income from the show, including DVD sales, merchandising and foreign distribution. Hall, a Golden Globe winner and four-time Emmy nominee for his role as a conflicted serial killer, brings serious leverage to the table. It would be difficult for the pay cabler to continue the series without him. Salaries for cable TV stars have been rising in recent years. "Mad Men" topper Jon Hamm set a high bar in June by inking a megabucks new deal with AMC and Lionsgate TV valued at $10 million over three seasons.
