Michel Hazanavicius, the Artist Behind 'The Artist,' Round the Great Crowd-Pleaser (Video)
Michel Hazanavicius is not the easiest title to convey, nevertheless it's among people hard ones that you need to really make time to learn... and fast. Ultimately, Hazanavicius written and directed The Artist, the black-and-white-colored quiet movie that has, against all odds, become most likely probably the most serious competitors -- as well as the finest crowd-pleaser -- from the honours season. Indeed, it's quite feasible for the 44-year-old Frenchman -- who's strikingly tall and handsome, and whom I mistook for just about any celebrity initially initially when i first saw him within the Telluride Film Festival in September -- may find yourself with not only a number of Academy Award nominations but a statuette or two come Oscar evening.our editor recommends'The Artist' Official Poster Hits the Web'The Artist' Builds up Another Audience Award within the Chicago Film Festival Within the last two several days since i have have first saw The Artist in Telluride -- it opened up in May at Cannes, where the Weinstein Company quickly selected up -- I've had the pleasure of speaking with Hazanavicius on numerous occasions, frequently about our shared adoration for classic (and quiet) movies. We videotaped among people conversations a few days ago, even though the noise inside the room coupled with Hazanavicius's quiet speaking voice pressure you to definitely certainly listen somewhat harder than most interviews, I still find it content (including periodic cameos with the Artist star/prankster Jean Dujardin -- see 3:11, 3:35, and particularly 3:47) merits your time and energy. You'll be able to choose yourself by checking it near the top of this publish! After we discuss... Hazanavicius fell deeply deeply in love with movies just like a kid, but his journey to as being a filmmaker themselves was slow and incremental. He labored becoming an intern around the film set, then composed gags French comedies, then written and directed some shorts, after which it, in the typically funny and mischevious move, develop a film using clips from well-known Hollywood productions, only named with crazy French dialogue, which increased to become viral Internet sensation in France and aided to put him in the spotlight. His finest profile films, right before The Artist, were OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies (2006) and OSS 117: Lost in Rio (2009), two obligations in the French film franchise built around a Jason Bourne-like character, only comedy. The star in the films, who was simply already on-board before Hazanvicius, was french TV star -- who'd soon be considered a huge French celebrity, too -- Dujardin. Dujardin will be a large fan of Hazanavicius's viral film, as well as the two quiet but funny compatriots increased being fast pals. PHOTOS: Toronto Film Festival: 13 Films to know It absolutely was following a first prior to the second OSS film it first happened to Hazanavicius he'd love creating a black-and-white-colored quiet movie. It absolutely was an idea which will have made an appearance crazy to a lot of people, while not to him -- "I don't judge others which i don't judge myself" -- even though he understood that seeing the idea through "could be very hardInch and require creative freedom and partners who've been much like eccentric and courageous as themselves. He showed up at to some producer who was simply interested in his work combined with formerly told him he'll make "any movie" with him, referred to as his bluff, and was very gratified to discover he'd meant what he mentioned. Two several days later, he'd written an entire "scenario" -- not just a "script," because it is, ultimately, a basic movie -- and began putting the various items of the expansion together. STORY: 'The Artist' Wins Audience Award at Hamptons Worldwide Film Festival Hazanavicius states he written The Artist having a couple in your head right from the start: Berenice Bejo, his lovely wife, for your female lead, and Dujardin for your male lead. Despite the fact that he understood that Bejo would agree to make it happen, according to him he was not ever certain Dujardin would, too. "Berenice is certainly an actress -- people know her in France, but she's not just a large star," he describes. "But Jean is definitely an very huge star in France -- he's enjoy George Clooney." Fortunately, both stars registered for your project, regardless -- or even because -- in the unique challenges it might involve, including: requiring to do something in the style that neither had ever employed before (which precious handful of other stars had employed within the last 80-plus years), learning how to tapdance inside a top end (body doubles were unthinkable since Hazanavicius was adament that full-body shots be applied), and shooting the film in just 35 days (on Hollywood studio backlots definately not their houses). STORY: 'The Artist': The Not-So-Quiet Entry The Weinstein Company's method to profit the Artist overcome modern moviegoers' natural prejudice against black-and-white-colored and quiet movies would be to show the film at nearly any film festival that will have it right before its November 23 release date -- including people in Cannes (where Dujardin won best actor), Telluride, Toronto, NY, San Sebastian (where it won everyone else award), Hamptons (where it won another audience award), Chicago (where it won another audience award), Savannah, etc. -- and permit the general public run its publicity campaign on their own account. To date, this program seems being working, as audience after audience walks into Hazanavicius's film with low anticipation, only to allow it to relaxation getting been amazed and raring to see others to have a look. Heading into November, the situation is certainly trying to find for your Artist -- as well as the artist. As Hazanavicius states, "It's a really nice story." The Artist Michel Hazanavicius

In an interview taped Tuesday morning for broadcast on that night'sThe Tonight Show With Jay Leno, President Barack Obama told the talk show host that he has not been watching the debates among his prospective Republican rivals.our editor recommendsObama's Trip to L.A. PHOTOS: 10 Hollywood Players That Will Make a Difference in the 2012 Elections On a more serious note, Obama told Leno that he believes Americans are weary of the congressional Republicans' reflexive opposition to his legislative program. "Look, I think the things that folks across the country are most fed up with, whether you are a Democrat, Republican, Independent, is putting party ahead of country or putting the next election ahead of the next generation," the president said. Similarly, when Leno asked Obama how he felt about GOP criticism of his decision to withdraw American troops from Iraq by the end of the year, the chief executive replied, "It's shocking that they opposed something I proposed." PHOTOS: Best Presidents in Film and Television Asked by Leno for his reaction to the execution of Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafiby insurgents in that country, Obama mused: "Well, this is somebody who, for 40 years, has terrorized his country and supported terrorism. And he had an opportunity during the Arab spring to finally let loose of his grip on power and to peacefully transition into democracy. We gave him ample opportunity, and he wouldn't do it. And obviously, you never like to see anybody come to the kind of end that he did, but I think it obviously sends a strong message around the world to dictators that people long to be free and they need to respect the human rights and the universal aspirations of people." Paranormal Activity 3 Wins US Box Office
Scares up a record-breaking horror haulAs we creep steadily closer towards Halloween, the ghosts are gathering and the American box office has seen a boost from punters clearly looking to get spooked. Horror threequel Paranormal Activity 3 pulled off something of a coup, opening to the biggest estimated figure ever for a horror movie and smashing through Paramount's expectations. The film, which serves as a prequel to the other two, opened at the top of the charts with an impressive $54 million, which means it's into healthy profit already given the budget of $5 million. There was much less good news awaiting the teams behind the week's other new releases, however, as Real Steel and Footloose held on well to slip just one place down into second and third place respectively. Hugh Jackman and the boxing robots earned $11.3 million in their third week, while the dancing teens scored $10 million in their second.Paul WS Anderson's Three Musketeers saw their swash severely buckle, opening much lower than Summit's expectations and only scoring $8.8 million for fourth place. George Clooney's political drama The Ides Of March took fifth with $4.9 million.Sixth place went to Dolphin Tale, which earned $4.2 million, while Moneyball was down to seventh with $4 million.Johnny English Reborn proved to be a damp squib with American audiences, opening in eighth with $3.8 million, though we doubt Universal is too worried as Rowan Atkinson and co proved much popular over here and elsewhere, with the comedy already edging towards $100 million worldwide. Ninth was The Thing, which continued to do lacklustre business (how bad? Last week it opened in third and has already sunk six places) with $3.1 million, while cancer comedy 50/50 was 10th with $2.8 million. To face your demonic past with statistics, check out the full charts over at Box Office Mojo.
