Adele cancels more tour dates
U.K. pop-soul sensation Adele, whose album "21" is the bestselling release of the year, will undergo surgery to address ongoing throat problems and has canceled her remaining 2011 appearances. A statement from the vocalist's label Columbia Records said, "She is to undergo surgery to alleviate the current issues with her throat and a full recovery is expected. As a result, doctors have ordered her to rest her voice and completely recuperate before looking to schedule any work commitments." A half-dozen November dates in the U.K. were axed. In early October, 10 U.S. performances were canceled, but at that time no plans for surgery were revealed; on that occasion, the singer issued a statement saying, "I have absolutely no choice but to recuperate properly and fully, or I risk damaging my voiceforever." This marks the third time this year that the red-hot singer has dropped engagements due to her continuing throat problems. She axed nine U.S. dates in June (Daily Variety, June 6). Lofted by the hit singles "Rolling in the Deep" and "Someone Like You," "21" has sold 4.1 million copies in the U.S. since its release in February. It is currently No. 1 in the nation for a 13th non-consecutive week. Contact Jeff Sneider at jeff.sneider@variety.com
